Renovate Building 2

No longer in use, the former 1949 coal-fired boiler plant at the Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital was transformed into a modern, three-story administrative building which houses mission-critical functions including telephone triage and the VA VISN 12 call center. The design blends old with new exterior design and materials that were carefully considered to exhibit an updated, modern look in contrast to the existing historical brick. The design had particular structural design challenges due to the internal steel structure integrated into the existing coal bunkers. Detailed phasing was required to maintain the building’s structural integrity and for new floors and framing. Extensive site investigation was conducted to verify the tight structural tolerances. The building’s new iconic main entry was placed where the original smokestack had been. Stairs and elevators and key support were provided as the hub for building’s operations.
