The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska needed to address its patient and staff parking needs. The VA engaged our design team in the development of a 493-stall parking garage with infrastructure to allow for an additional level and a half of future vertical expansion. The resulting design meets VA standards with the parking structure’s exterior façade designed to match the new Ambulatory Care Center exterior façade, which was under construction when construction on the parking garage began. The parking structure included elevators as well as multiple staircases with vertical expansion capabilities. To establish the proper placement of the parking structure and future campus parking needs, a masterplan was established to identify a suitable location for parking within the hospital campus. Several locations were analyzed for current and future needs. Preliminary cost estimates, detail studies of each potential site, and proximity to other new construction on campus were considered in the plans of the new structure which helped to set the roadmap for current and future parking needs.
