ALBUQUERQUE NATIONAL CEMETERY - MASTER PLANNING
Albuquerque, NM
Situated on 230 acres of former ranch land on the northwest outskirts of Albuquerque, the Albuquerque National Cemetery will provide a final resting place that honors the service and sacrifice to our Nation by Veterans of the United States Armed Forces. The multiple buildings in the cemetery draw from the rich and diverse architecture and unique environment of the region. Thick walls form bold rectilinear geometries, a contemporary take on the traditional use of adobe as a passive thermal strategy. The masses are balanced by a thin layer of structural roof framing that extends beyond the volumes. Echoing the vigas used in traditional Pueblo architecture, these extensions form louvered trellises that provide protection and comfort for visitors from the intense sun of the Chihuahuan Desert.
