SERVICE COMMITTAL SHELTER, ALBUQUERQUE NATIONAL CEMETERY

Albuquerque, NM

A vital part of the new Albuquerque National Cemetery, the Committal Shelters provide a place for mourners to honor the deceased before their final internment.  The shelters are composed of three basic elements that allude to traditional Pueblo building strategies. Board formed concrete mass walls, a basalt clad volume and a weathering steel trellis, are arranged to provide protection from the elements and a quiet oasis for contemplation and ceremony. The interplay of materiality and structure is expressed through intersection and overlap.  Openings within the stone clad walls allow natural light to penetrate, illuminating the richly textured surfaces.
