ADMINISTRATION AND PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTER, ALBUQUERQUE NATIONAL CEMETERY

Albuquerque, NM

The Administration and Public Information Center at the Albuquerque National Cemetery is a quiet, and dignified oasis for contemplation. Two buildings are connected by a louvered trellis of floating weathered steel and turquoise glass. Thick board formed concrete walls, a contemporary take on the traditional adobe construction indigenous to the region, are intersected by a basalt-clad double-height volume that provides a continuity of material from exterior to interior and a sense of openness to the staff offices. Interior finishes of black walnut and turquoise tile complement the basalt stone. The subtle and rich materiality reflects the solemnity of the cemetery, while providing visitors and staff with a welcoming space to honor, mourn and commune.
