VISITOR EDUCATION CENTER, RIVERSIDE NATIONAL CEMETERY
Riverside, CA
The Visitor Education Center (VEC) at the RNC features three primary areas: Auditorium/Holographic Theater, Exhibition, and Administrative/Service. The Administration and Exhibition spaces serve as a volumetric reference point that complements the distinctive geometry of the Auditorium/Holographic Theater, which faces the Medal of Honor Memorial to the northeast. This orientation establishes a hierarchy, connecting to the proposed Administration Building to the southwest and offering a layered visitor experience.
A rusticated gabion wall with pre-patinated weathering steel Morse code perforated panels contrast with the elevated standing seam zinc cladding on the southern façade, framing the main entry. As visitors move through the lobby, Great Hall, Exhibition, and Theater spaces, materials transition from rustic to refined, showcasing captivating views of the Medal of Honor Memorial and neighboring mountain range.
Interior design elements incorporate exterior architectural features with materials used both subtly and prominently. Overhead beams guide visitors to viewing areas along a central spine, while floor patterns and exposed structures highlight geometric transitions between zones. The Great Hall/Permanent Exhibition spaces integrate exterior elements into the exhibit experience, while other exhibition areas adopt a more introspective atmosphere, emphasizing exhibits over architectural details or external surroundings.
