Construct Central Chiller and Emergency Generator Plant
Northern Arizona VA Health Care System, AZ
The Northern Arizona VA Health Care System in Prescott, AZ contracted Nagel Architects + Engineers to provide Architect/Engineer design services at the Prescott VHA site. Work included replacement of (7) existing emergency generators and (5) existing chillers which support the entire facility. First a limited life-cycle cost study of various chiller options was performed to include air-cooled, magnetic bearing chillers, and ground source heat pumps. The new chillers were designed to support 262,000 sq ft and 45,000 sq ft of future growth.
The project also incorporated providing the analysis of two options for their 12.47 kV generator plant – one generator vs two generators. The new generator design was fueled from an adjacent 30,000 gallons fuel oil tank and included new paralleling and synchronizing gear. Reference voltage signal to photovoltaic array was incorporated to utilize power during a utility power outage. Vehicular access gates, security fence and moving an existing sewer pipeline were also necessary.
